Upcoming Activites for 2008-2009
Free Medical and Surgical Mission
The Order of Asclepius has established it’s reputation in the University and in Iloilo through its free medical and surgical missions. Throughout the year, the Order provides consultations and medicines to the indigenous people of Iloilo free of charge. Minor surgeries such as circumcisions and cyst removals are also included at certain events. Funds for these activities are raised through the various fundraisers, donations by health organizations and through the kindness of our senior members . Being an organization of doctors, the members and alumni make the core group of each event, along side other various health care groups. It also gives our junior members the opportunity for direct exposure to patients. Here they have the advantage over regular students of their level. Through experience they learn basic history taking and physical exam, and eventually diagnosis and treatment. As early as the 1st year of medical school, surgical missions give our junior members the rare opportunity for hands on experience in basic surgical principles and techniques. The senior physician alumni supervise all aspects of patient care.
Public Health Campaigns
The responsibilities of a doctor do not only include expertise in diagnosis and treatment, but also extend to prevention and health awareness. The same ideas are in the Order of Asclepius. The Order sponsors various health oriented activities throughout the year for the benefit of the medical students and the general public. Each year during Medicine Week Celebration, the Order holds a Blood Letting Activity in cooperation with local health institutions. Students and faculty are encouraged to donate blood for a cause. The Order of Asclepius has been involved in information campaigns in cooperation with other awareness groups on a local and provincial level. Stragtegies such as Infomation displays in mall areas, holding open forums, and sponsoring expert lectures are just a few ways the Order has increased awareness. Public issues tackled by the Order include the detrimental effects of smoking, the issue of a coal fired power plant in Iloilo, waste management, and epilepsy awareness.
Charity Programs
One of the objectives of the Order is to be of service to the Filipino community through specific projects in our capacity as medical students. Aside from providing free medical services to the indigents of Iloilo, the Order also does what it can to provide another, and sometimes just as effective, type of healing. Last year, our services extended to the inmates of the the local Prison, not only providing medical services, but also personal hygiene supplies and clothing were distributed thanks to donations and fundraising. Funds raised also during the year are set aside for the holiday season gift giving coupled with Christmas caroling at the Pediatrics ward at West Visayas State University Medical Center.
Event Organizing
The Order has a long history for providing some of the best entertainment for the medical students and the College of Medicine. Ms. Medisin has always been the highlight of Medicine Week, unfortunately it was put on temporary hiatus. In it’s place, the Order started a new and just as exciting tradition. For the past few years, Medicine Week culminated in a wild, all night, let loose party. It’s the chance for stressed out med students to release their tension and have fun. Music with a live band, dancing, and crazy games make each event memorable, and yes, there is beer! The Order also sponsors other fun events during Med week including, our own version of the “Amazing Race”, which is much like the original and entails teams in search for clues all over Iloilo to the final goal and prize in the College of Medicine. Whenever there’s a party in the college, the order is not far behind.
Academic Confrences
The Order also does it’s best to look out for it’s member’s, at both a personal and academic level. each year the Order sponsors events that cater to the intellect and virtues of the Asclepian and his fellow classmates. Throughout the year, scientific conferences and forums are held in Iloilo which are open to any medical student. We believe in excellence in every aspect, especially in academics. Our alumni are consistently of the top 10 students in their class and we are proud to have several board exam top notchers.
Leadership Programs
Character and integrity are just as important in the Order. Every year a student leadership program is held for the benefit of it’s members. The seven tenents of the Order serve as our guide in become student and community leaders. Teamwork and bonding highlight the activities together with lectures and insights from senior Asclepians make our programs a yearly success. The time shared together as Asclepians are some of the best that a medical student can ever hope for. In this bond of brotherhood we share, we will always know that during the trials of medicine, we will not walk alone.
