Congratz Pol!” Ha? Ano?

October 17, 2008

by Apple Bistis

It was a humid, busy, late afternoon of my life as treasurer of the medicine student council. It was the first day of enrollment for the freshmen. One of my classmates approached me and said, “Congratz Pol!” I simply answered “HA? ANO?” He told me the story that I made it to the top ten, but I did not believe him even until I saw my name on the list. My mind keeps questioning, “What have I done?” Then I found a reason which I believed at first that maybe because it is all about our research which I presented that made it to the National Competition and won the second place, or the activities I joined during the medicine week and the university week. These are all my reasons why every time people congratulated me, I simply answered them with a smile.
It was only when I took hold of the certificate that I believed I made it. But I still questioned myself, “What did I do?” Then, with the help of Dr Heny’s Zhen technique, I began to complete the puzzle.
God really works in many mysterious ways. It was during our Pediatrics block that the door of the Order of Asclepius opens in front of me and welcomes me with overwhelming opportunities I pursued my dream to become a member not just to be a part of it but to extend my help to the people. The activities that the order offers are my inspirations to double my time so that I will not compromise my time for studying and time for the people which we constantly help. Medical missions and community projects really pushed me to work hard and study more because it opens my eyes to the reality that I have much to learn. I started to be hungry and thirsty for knowledge and skills. And it broadens my horizon that I am not studying for the sake of passing my exams but for the people which I will help during my stay in the college and in the future. I practiced what I have learned inside the classroom and the pearls that our doctor brothers and sisters shared during their lectures. I thank the order for all of these.
Above all, I thank God for all His blessings and I believe that “What I am today is God’s gift to me; what I will be tomorrow is my gift to God, Let me therefore be the best that I can be.”

Time is Gold

October 17, 2008

Clement Ceazar a.k.a. Borj, is a consistent top ten medical student, currently the president of Medical Student Council, and an active member of the Order of Asclepius. Borj, paano mo na tanan gin-obra??!

“Time is gold” may sound cliché, but for us medical students, time is much more than gold, it is our LIFE. Time is so important that it can make or break us in med school. Procrastination is one of our worst enemies. I myself am a crammer but I oftentimes regret being one. In order to defeat procrastination, time management will be our weapon. The following are some tips on time management which I have read and trying to practice.

Have a daily schedule or a daily tasks list. This will be of big help in managing time. You may

prefer it written or just a mental list, but whatever your choice is, make sure to have your daily goals so that your day will be directed towards achieving it.

Prioritize your goals. Accomplish first goals which are of immediate importance than the others.

Grab the opportunity. Use your vacant time to study in advance for the lectures or exams. Notes/scribbles are very useful at this point.

Know your study rhythm. It is the time of the day when you can study more efficiently. It could be at noon, evening, or early morning.

Treat yourself. Reward your “abused” body
(eat ice cream, watch a movie, go to a spa, etc.) after an exam or any significant event in your life.

OA CHRISTMAS PARTY AND CHRISTMAS CAROLS

October 17, 2008

Christmas Part at Dr. Tirador\'s Carolling at Dr. Tirador\'s Carolling at Dr. Tirador\'sEvery year, it has already been a tradition of the order to bring holiday cheer to the patients as well as the medical staff at the pediatrics and internal medicine wards by serenading them with Christmas carols and giving them gifts. The holiday season would not also be complete without caroling at Dr. Tirador’s residence and the delicious food prepared for us! Thanks doc!
Before we went home to our respective provinces, we ended the year by conducting the yearly Asclepian Christmas party, this time held at the Marold’s residence. “ The Christmas party was fun, a time of bonding through games, exchange gifts and fun-filled conversations”-Leif Bayani Marold

Asclepian Group Study (AGD)

October 17, 2008

Through the efforts of our Lady Herald, Kitz Vilano, in her struggle to promote academic excellence (char! hehe), a core study group for the freshmen asclepians was established. Together with the five of them, last Wednesday, July 30, 2008, LH facilitated the freshmen in studying their embryology exam. We are hoping that this core study group will help the freshmen not only in the academic field but also in making that bond within them stronger by actually trying to encourage and help each other.

Saturday August 2, 2008, the third year students (Jeannet, Kathe,’ Tin2x, Det, Kitz, and yours truly) also, in our struggle to promote academic excellence ( pag sure mo ba! hehe) met to conduct the first meeting of the third year’s core study group. The discussion was almost the same with our usual SGD, only that each person was assigned one lecture topic to master/familiarize and discuss/share with the group. So far, it was really OK! So we are inviting all third year asclepians to join our next AGD (Asclepian Group Discussion, toink, toink!) this Wednesday or Thursday to prepare for our exam on Friday.

I haven’t heard of the second years’ forming their own AGD. So second years, GO GO NA! :-)

GOD Bless everyone and good luck for our exams! mwah

Original Lyrics of the Asclepian Song

June 5, 2007

Here is the original lyrics to our Asclepian Song as composed by co-founder Dr. Danilo Encarnacion. (Also updated under “ORDER” section.)

Asclepian Song
Lyrics by: Danilo Encarnacion, M.D.

I
Troubles may come, worries and problems each day
Trying to drive us from our dreams away
But we are strong and invincible,
Clinging along to one and all
Never to let temptations keep us apart

II
You and I together with all the task ahead
Though at times we find it hard to do
But we are strong and invincible,
Clinging along to one and all
Sharing together defeat or victory

III
Come on let us unite,
Together we’ll win this fight.
Together we shall march onward,
and sing with all our might

IV
Asclepians, Asclepians let us unite as one
Together we shall overcome all odds we’ll shun
and ever loyal Asclepians, we’ll be and always be
never to drift away from our responsibility

(Repeat IV)

V
‘Cause we are strong and invincible,
Clinging along to one and all
Sharing together defeat or victory
Sharing together defeat or victory
Sharing together defeat or victory…

OA: A Kapuso as well?!

October 27, 2006

Last May and June 2006, the Order of Asclepius was invited by Kapuso GMA-7 to help in their inter-district basketball league tournament. The tournament was conceptualized by a number noted of City councilors including Hon. Jed Mabilog and the station to promote unity and sportsmanship. The games were held every Saturday at different gymnasiums of participating districts in Iloilo. The finals however were held on the gymnasium of the University of San Agustin on the last week of the month of June.
Our participation include being the first aiders of each game, together with other organizations of the College that the station also invited. For the service of others, the OA has once again proven that it cannot only be a Kapamilya but a Kapuso as well.
